Sølv er et grundstof med atomtegnet Ag (fra Latin argentum, fra proto-indoeuropæisk h₂erǵ: "skinnende" eller "hvid") og atomnummeret 47. Det er et blødt, hvidt, skinnende overgangsmetal, med meget høj elektrisk ledningsevne, varmeledningsevne og reflektionsevne for et metal.
Inde i stjernerne kan der gå hundreder eller tusinder af år imellem, at samme atomkerne optager nye neutroner. Der er tale om en såkaldt s-proces (for slow), som eksempelvis kan omdanne sølv (grundstof nr. 47) til antimon (grundstof nr. 51). Det sker når, den stabile sølvisotop Ag-109 har indfanget 12 neutroner – én efter én.
Introduction into Neutron imaging. The scintillation (thermal or cold neutrons) is a twostep mechanism: first a core reaction with ions of high capture cross section (155/157 Gd, 6 Li or 10 B) to create a secondary radiation took place followed by the excitation of a luminous material showing a fluorescence emission in the optimal range of the detection system. In studies of 108 Ag m and 110 Ag m produced by thermal-neutron capture in natural silver, an 88.0-keV transition was observed. The K : L : M ratios of 95 ± 3 : 100 : 20 ± 5 are in good agreement with the theoretical values for an 88 keV E3 transition. This transition was identified as the 40-second isomeric one in 109 Ag m.
